Pangaea Applauds Women Deliver’s Commitment to Reducing Maternal Mortality and Achieving Universal Access to Reproductive Health

June 7, 2010

On June 7th 2010, political, civil society and business leaders will convene in Washington DC for the Women Deliver 2010 Conference to focus the world's attention on the unacceptable and preventable 350,000 to 500,000 deaths of women and girls from pregnancy-related causes each year.

Pangaea shares Women Deliver's commitment to generate the political will and financial commitments needed to fulfil Millennium Development Goal 5: to reduce maternal mortality and achieve universal access to reproductive health. Furthermore, for MDG 5 to be achieved, the world's commitment to, and investment in the global response to AIDS must be sustained: AIDS continues to affect disproportionately women and girls. Over half of the 33 million people living with HIV worldwide are women, and AIDS is the leading cause of death for women of child-bearing age.

Pangaea calls on the governments of all 192 nations of the world to reaffirm their previously made commitments to meet the Millennium Development Goals, particularly those related to the health of girls and women, HIV and gender.

Pangaea is dedicated to working with countries heavily affected by AIDS and their international partners to identify and implement sustainable, human rights-based HIV prevention and treatment programs for vulnerable populations most affected by HIV, including women and girls, men who have sex with men and injecting drug users.
