Dr. Sophy Wong provides technical assistance to Chinese national partners through the Gates China program where she focuses on development and implementation of site-specific quality improvement programs, expansion of HIV testing, and capacity building for HIV care and treatment in Kunming, Hangzhou, Wuhan and Chongqing, China.

Dr. Wong completed undergraduate study at Brown University and received her medical doctorate from The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. Immediately prior to entering the HIV Clinical Scholars Program, Dr. Wong was a resident physician in the UCSF Primary Care Internal Medicine program, based at San Francisco General Hospital. Dr. Wong is an active leader in global HIV/AIDS health policy and an organizing committee member of the Global Health Track at UCSF, a task force developing an international health care curriculum for UCSF residents.

During her year as the HIV Clinical Scholar, Dr. Wong’s strong interest in care of underserved populations manifested as outstanding clinical care and patient education programs targeted at diverse patient groups including women, youth and adolescents, monolingual Spanish speakers and Asian/Pacific Islanders. Dr. Wong also spent significant time during her Fellowship in East Africa where she helped pilot new clinical training, ARV rollout and capacity building programs in rural areas of Kenya.

Dr. Wong is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions including the Julius Krevans Award for clinical excellence from the Department of Medicine at SFGH (2005), an International Health Institute Foreign Studies Fellowship for HIV study in Eldoret, Kenya (2003) and the Dr. Patricia McCormick Prize for the outstanding female student in her class at Brown Medical School (2004). Currently Dr. Wong is providing primary care and HIV specialty services to communities in underserved areas of California, including work in clinics that focus on Asian immigrants and non-English speaking populations. She also continues her work in Kenya with ongoing visits where she provides direct care and technical assistance to local clinicians.
