Health Systems Strengthening

There continues to be a critical need to support the development and strengthening of health systems focused on improving the quality of comprehensive and integrated prevention care and treatment services.  In resource limited settings especially, health system strengthening activities must be linked to robust monitoring and evaluation practices in order to provide program managers and policymakers evidence to inform decision-making.

Health systems strengthening encompasses a broad array of activities, including improving the quality of care through training, strengthening providers' abilities to implement service, and assessing and improving the capacity of health information systems to better track program monitoring data.

Pangaea assists its country partners to build, strengthen and sustain locally owned HIV prevention, care and treatment programs, rooted in the communities they serve, and integrated into national health and development strategies. We have special expertise in the application of innovative technologies to improve health access and service provision.  We utilize the full range of both qualitative and quantitative methods to measure, assess, and improve the use of health systems data.

Current health systems strengthening projects include:

Health Systems Strengthening for HIV and Maternal Health in Zimbabwe -- Pangaea is working in partnership with Africa University, Zimbabwe AIDS Prevention Programme, University of Zimbabwe and Chitungwize Hospital Opportunistic Infection Clinic. 

Technical Assistance to the Yunnan Bureau of Health -- This project, which is funded though a cooperative agreement with Clinton Foundation, supports the development and implementation of comprehensive HIV care and treatment at multiple sites in Yunnan Province. 

Building Health Worker Capacity in Tanzania -- Pangaea is supporting the development of a community health worker youth corps curricula which can be standardized and replicated throughout the country.

Developing a Cell-Phone Based Appointment Reminder System in Cambodia -- In collaboration with the Cambodian National Centre for HIVIAIDS, Dermatology and STDs, Pangaea is assisting in the development an appointment reminder system for HIV patients.

Accelerating AIDS Action in China --  Pangaea is serving as technical assistance provider to the Gates Foundation and Chinese NGOs to demonstrate the feasibility of creating a large-scale model of HIV prevention and treatment in 15 cities in China.
