Comprehensive IDU Risk Reduction Strategies

Some of the fasted growing HIV epidemics in the world are being fueled by injection drug use. Pangaea staff members have led efforts to bring appropriate care and treatment to IDU populations, focused on the development of complementary HIV and drug treatment programs, including methadone therapy.

Current and recently-concluded projects include:

Comprehensive Drug Treatment for IDUs in Tanzania -- Pangaea is providing technical assistance  to support the Tanzanian Drug Control Commission and the Zanzibar AIDS Control program in the development of medically assistant treatment for IDUs.

Providing Comprehensive Treatment to IDUs in Yunnan --Since 2004 Pangaea has been providing technical assistance to the Yunnan Bureau of Health, funded though a cooperative agreement with Clinton Foundation, that supports the development and implementation of comprehensive HIV care and treatment at multiple sites in Yunnan Province, including drug-user detention facilities.

Bringing HIV+ IDUs into Treatment and Care in Ukraine -- In partnership with the Clinton Foundation, Pangaea spearheaded to adoption of methadone therapy in Ukraine and provided technical assistance to the Ministry of Health in the establishment of comprehensive HIV and drug treatment for IDUs.
