MSM & HIV
Men who have sex with men (MSM) are 19 times more likely to be infected with HIV than the general population in lower and middle-income countries worldwide, but fewer than one in 20 MSM has access to the prevention, care, and treatment services they need. Fueled by stigma and human rights abuses, HIV epidemics in MSM communities are on the rise. Pangaea is working actively to counter this crisis through programmatic, as well as policy and advocacy, efforts.
Pangaea's current MSM-focused work includes:
Accelerating AIDS Action in China -- Pangaea is serving as technical assistance provider to the Gates Foundation and Chinese NGOs to demonstrate the feasibility of creating a large-scale model of HIV prevention and treatment in 15 cities in China.
Guidance to legislators and policy-markers - Pangaea is identifying, analyzing and documenting evidence-informed and human rights-based approaches to providing comprehensive HIV services to men who have sex with men (MSM) in resource poor settings.
Partnership with the MSM Global Forum -- Pangaea and the Global Forum on MSM and HIV (MSMGF) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that sets forth their mutual intention to strengthen the global response to AIDS among MSM, particularly in developing countries. As spelled out by the MOU, Pangaea and MSMGF will be collaborating on policy and advocacy at the international and national levels, working to strengthen national comprehensive HIV-related interventions aimed at MSM, and identifying and developing funding opportunities to support joint projects.
