Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation

Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation is no longer in operation. Thank you for your interest.

Founded in 2001 by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Pangaea Global AIDS worked for over a decade building partnerships that improved the lives of people living with and most at-risk for HIV worldwide. This archive preserves the legacy of our work in technical cooperation, research, policy, and advocacy.

Our Mission

Pangaea Global AIDS built partnerships that improved the lives of people living with and most at-risk for HIV to ensure equitable access to prevention, testing, treatment and care. Headquartered in Oakland, California, we worked with partners around the world to implement sustainable, comprehensive and evidence-informed programs through technical cooperation, research, policy and advocacy.

Our Vision

We envisioned a world where people affected by HIV lead healthy and productive lives – regardless of circumstances of birth, gender, sexual orientation, or geography – in communities free from the threat of HIV.

Our Impact

Pangaea served as an influential global think tank, convening experts from around the world to improve HIV and Hepatitis C treatment guidelines, help countries deliver HIV services more effectively, and fight the stigma and discrimination still faced by people living with and affected by HIV.

We designed policies and supported countries as they implemented innovative approaches to HIV prevention, testing and treatment for vulnerable and marginalized groups. We also partnered with leading multinational corporations to implement comprehensive HIV education, testing and treatment programs.

Our Work

Technical Cooperation

We supported national governments and local partners to design and deliver innovative programs helping people affected by HIV, breast and cervical cancer, and viral hepatitis lead healthy and productive lives.

  • Advised provincial and city authorities in China to establish confidential HIV testing and linkage to care services for gay men, and adapted HIV community mobilization lessons to scale up breast cancer screening and treatment services for women
  • Supported local partners in Oakland implementing groundbreaking Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) services for young men of color who have sex with men
  • Helped major international corporations develop workplace programs and policies for HIV, TB and Hepatitis B and C
  • Assisted the Tanzanian Government in providing clean needles, methadone and other harm reduction and HIV services to people who inject drugs
  • Supported national adaptation of global HIV treatment guidelines in Zimbabwe

Research and Social Policy

We conducted implementation research to gather evidence about effective approaches in local contexts to ensure equitable access to prevention, testing, treatment and care.

  • Developed and costed case studies documenting ARV treatment and support programs that improved client uptake and retention in care and treatment
  • Worked in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe with the SHAZ!-HUB to determine how to best meet the HIV and sexual/reproductive health needs of young and adolescent women, including the potential use of PrEP and microbicides
  • Conducted research on methadone treatment for HIV prevention in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, examining feasibility, retention, and predictors of attrition
  • Studied inequities in harm reduction service utilization among male and female drug users in Tanzania
  • Provided monitoring and evaluation support in Zimbabwe through participation in major consortia delivering clinical mentorship and community support for people living with HIV

Global Policy and Diplomacy

Pangaea convened experts from science, health services, affected communities and the private sector to consider evidence and develop HIV/AIDS policies and programs reaching vulnerable and marginalized groups. Our staff provided targeted advice to international health institutions as they developed new policies and guidelines shaping programs worldwide.

  • Brought together global researchers, health care providers, drug manufacturers, policy makers, funders, and community members to develop optimal drugs, diagnostics and service delivery for all those affected by HIV
  • Organized the CADO 2 and Vancouver Treatment Optimization Meeting
  • Adapted lessons from HIV for broader health priorities, applying HIV community mobilization strategies to help women’s groups scale up breast cancer screening and treatment services in China and Tanzania
  • Facilitated the Global Fund’s 2015 Partnership Forums, participated in high-level meetings and roundtables, and advocated for increased donor and multilateral action in the response to AIDS

Our Legacy

From 2001 through our closure, Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation pioneered implementation science approaches, built lasting partnerships across continents, and contributed to shaping global HIV/AIDS policy. This archive preserves our work and the voices of the communities we served, standing as a testament to the power of evidence-based, community-centered global health action.
