About PGAF

Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation is no longer in operation. This website serves as a legacy archive preserving our history and impact.

Our History

Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation was founded by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2001, in response to the urgent need to expand access to HIV/AIDS care and treatment in developing countries. Under the founding leadership of Dr. Eric Paul Goosby as CEO and Chief Medical Officer, Pangaea grew from a bold vision into an influential global organization.

Headquartered in Oakland, California, with offices in Zimbabwe and strategic partnerships worldwide, we worked at the intersection of science, policy, and community action to address the global HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Our Mission

Pangaea Global AIDS built partnerships that improved the lives of people living with and most at-risk for HIV to ensure equitable access to prevention, testing, treatment and care. We worked with partners around the world to implement sustainable, comprehensive and evidence-informed programs through technical cooperation, research, policy and advocacy.

Our Vision

We envisioned a world where people affected by HIV lead healthy and productive lives—regardless of circumstances of birth, gender, sexual orientation, or geography—in communities free from the threat of HIV.

Our Approach

Pangaea was a pioneer in implementation science, focusing not just on what works in controlled research settings, but on how to make interventions work in diverse, real-world contexts. We served as a global think tank, convening experts from science, health services, affected communities, and the private sector to develop evidence-based HIV/AIDS policies and programs reaching vulnerable and marginalized groups.

Our work spanned multiple areas:

  • Technical Cooperation: Supporting national governments and local partners to design and deliver innovative programs for people affected by HIV, viral hepatitis, and related health challenges
  • Research and Social Policy: Conducting implementation research to gather evidence about effective approaches in local contexts
  • Global Policy and Diplomacy: Providing targeted advice to international health institutions and organizing convenings that shaped global HIV treatment guidelines and service delivery approaches

Where We Worked

Pangaea’s programs reached communities across Africa, Asia, and North America, including significant work in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, China, and Oakland, California. We partnered with national governments, community organizations, multilateral institutions like the Global Fund, and multinational corporations committed to comprehensive workplace health programs.

Our Legacy

From 2001 through our closure, Pangaea contributed to shaping global HIV/AIDS policy, pioneered implementation science approaches, and built lasting partnerships that improved health outcomes for vulnerable populations worldwide. This archive preserves that legacy and the lessons learned from our work—lessons that remain relevant for addressing today’s global health challenges.
