Countrywide HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Plan
Pangaea worked closely with the Rwandan government in the development of a five-year HIV/AIDS Treatment and Care Plan that was approved in June of 2003. The ultimate goal of this ambitious plan is to provide increased longevity and improved quality of life for all people living with HIV/AIDS in Rwanda. Pangaea participated in the planning process as part of a team assembled by the William J. Clinton Foundation, which provided technical support to the planning effort. Pangaea staff members helped convene working groups around the country to identify current and future needs for HIV/AIDS services and develop a roadmap for creating the health care infrastructure necessary to deliver antiretroviral drugs ("ARVs"). This national system of care and treatment will include HIV testing and counseling, services coordination, medical treatment including ARVs, clinical monitoring and adherence support, psychosocial care, community and home-based care, ancillary support services, and prevention education and counseling.
Family Package Project
The Family Package Project was a joint initiative of the Office of the First Lady of Rwanda, the Minister of Health, and Pangaea in 2001. The goal of the project was to develop and implement a model of care for HIV-positive pregnant women, and their partners and children aimed at extending and improving their quality of life, and enhancing the stability of families affected by HIV. The project’s activities included an assessment of existing capabilities to provide HIV/AIDS treatment; delivery of care and treatment services, including counseling and ARVs, to families enrolled in the program; training of health care providers; and ongoing monitoring and evaluation. The Family Package Project was launched at the Kacyiru Centre de Sante in February of 2002 under the direction of Dr. Fidèle Ngabo, Pangaea’s physician in charge of the project in Rwanda. Pangaea played an important role in the initial implementation of the Family Package Program at the Kacyiru Centre de Sante, which by the end of 2004 had enrolled over 2500 HIV-positive patients in clinic programs, with approximately 250 patients receiving antiretroviral therapy. Financial support for the project recently shifted from Pangaea to Rwandan sources, ensuring sustainability over the long term.
