Countrywide HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Plan
In July 2003, the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation asked Pangaea to join its team of experts to assist the South African Government in preparing an HIV/AIDS treatment plan for providing ARVs and other life sustaining therapies to all those living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Six of Pangaea’s senior staff members, including CEO Dr. Eric Goosby and President Pat Christen, worked closely with a team of South African health experts to develop the treatment plan, which was approved by the South African Cabinet in November of 2003.
HIV Treatment Access Partnership
In 2001, Pangaea established a tri-regional partnership collaboration of hospitals, university medical institutions and community clinics to develop, test and disseminate models of HIV treatment and care that include antiretroviral drugs. Entitled the HIV Treatment Access Partnership, this unique collaboration includes the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the West Cape, regions that account for a significant part of South Africa’s HIV-positive population. In KwaZulu-Natal, collaboration partners include the University of Natal in Durban and St Mary’s hospital in Marianhill. In Gauteng, partners include Witswaterstrand University in Johannesburg and the Perinatal HIV Research Unit at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. In the West Cape collaboration partners include the Princess Diana of Wales HIV Research Foundation at Somerset Hospital and the University of Cape Town Lung Institute for Infectious Diseases.
